5 Ways to Obtain a U.S. Green Card

Going to a new country always leads to some form of apprehension. You don’t know what to expect and sometimes it’s hard to get the lay of the land. As a foreigner you will be limited by the lack of legal status, therefore the best thing to do is to apply for Permeant Residency (Green Card) as soon as you’re eligible.

According to the U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services , as a permanent resident (green card holder), you have the right to:

  • Live permanently in the United States provided you do not commit any actions that would make you removable under immigration law.
  • Work in the United States at any legal work of your qualification and choosing. (Please note that some jobs will be limited to U.S. citizens for security reasons)


  • Be protected by all laws of the United States, your state of residence and local jurisdictions.

Below you will find the most common ways of obtaining a Green Card:

  1. Job Sponsorship

After receiving a job offer, your new employer can file a Form I-140, Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker as well as a Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status on your behalf. Most times when your job sponsors you, they also pay all applicable fee; speak to your human resource representative for details.

  1. Getting Married to a US Citizen or Permanent Resident

You’re getting married, Congratulations! Your spouse will have to file a Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative on your behalf. Depending on if you do a one-step process or a two-step process you will have your own set of forms to file. Click here for more details.

  1. Green Card Lottery

Also known as the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (DV Program) makes up to 50,000 immigrant visas available annually, drawn from random selection among all entries to individuals who are from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. The DV Program is administered by the U.S. Department of State (DOS).

These next two are rare and more difficult to obtain, but worth looking in to.

  1. Sponsorship by a US Citizen parent or child

  1. Sponsorship by a business owning relative

If you have a relative that is a citizen of another country, but that relative has a substantial business in the US, they may be able to sponsor you under “job sponsorship”. Although there are many rules regulating this type of sponsorship, you may qualify; so don’t rule it out.
