At her 45th convocation ceremony that was held on Friday February 19, 2016, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) saw a total of 13,554 students receive various degree certificates. Out of those numbers are 85 First Class Honors.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba, had this to say at the pre-convocation press briefing.
“The University of Nigeria will award over 13, 554 first degree and diploma certificates to deserving young men and women who had been found worthy in character and in learning.”
The breakdown of the different class of degrees and certificates awarded included:
First Class Honors 85
Second Class Honors (Upper Division) 3,040
Second Class Honors (Lower Division) 7,286
Third Class Honors 2,237
Associateship Certificate in Education 4
Meanwhile, five distinguished Nigerians were given honorary Doctorate Degrees.
- The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe
- Former Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Coomassie
- Ambassador Godwin Alaoma Onyegbula
- Prince Arthur Eze was conferred with the Doctor of Philosophy in Public Administration (Honoris Causa)
- Hon. Justice Eze Ozobu would receive Doctor of Philosophy in Law (Honoris Causa)
The honorees were selected based on their altruistic and dedicated services to our country and humanity in their chosen fields of endeavor.
Ozumba went on to say, “We have also listed 19 of our eminent Professors for the title of Professor Emeritus. Those selected had distinguished themselves academically and are still making contributions to knowledge through their publications, inventions and creativity.”
