“You can’t judge a book by its cover.” We’ve heard this saying over and over again. We try not to do it, but it happens time and time again.
“First impression is a lasting impression.” This saying is also true, which is why we have to give the best first impression. It doesn’t matter if you are trying to cultivate a network of business contacts or trying to get a job; most people judge you before you even open your mouth. So what do you do to get pass that first moment?
#1: Dress the part.
The first thing that comes to mind is style of dress, and I will get to that, but the first thing you should think about is your facial expressions. Smile, show yourself friendly. Don’t look nervous or overly anxious, let them see that you are excited about this moment to meet them.
Now let’s talk about clothing. Make sure your style of dress fits the environment. If you are interviewing at a surf shop, don’t wear a suit. If you are networking during happy hour, dress business casual. No matter the situation, make sure to be neat, coordinated, and smelling fresh; you want them to remember you because of you, not your clothes.
#2: Know your stuff.
You created the perfect business card. Your resume is on the best paper. This is the moment you came here for, but none of your preparation will mean a thing if you don’t believe what you are about to say. Remember, you are the expert on you. Be confident in yourself and what you have to say. Your enthusiasm will shine through and create a lasting impression.
