Aftermath sexual harassment claims, US Congressman representing Michigan’s 13th congressional district, John Conyers Jr. said on Tuesday that he is retiring from Congress. He made this known via phone call to Detroit radio show host Mildred Gaddis, who said that the congressman called him from his hospital bed. Conyers has held the seat for over five decades. He added that he plans to endorse his son, John Conyers III.
Congressman Conyers told Mildred “My legacies can’t be compromised or diminished in any way by what we are going through now. This too shall pass. My legacies will continue through my children” he also thanks his supporters for their support over the years and added that the accusations against him are not true.
Many people have described his sudden retirement from Congress as fall from grace, but time will tell whether the circumstances behind his exit will affect his son’s and party’s chances during a special election to be called by Governor Snyder to select the Congressman’s successor for the remaining part of his tenure which is expected to end in June, 2019.
