A masterpiece painting which had been missing for about forty years before it was found hanging at a “modest” apartment in north London has been sold for a record price of £1.2 million ($1.6 million US) at a London auction last Wednesday. The London auction house initially predicted a price tag of between £200,000 and £300,000 ($275,000 to $413,000), less than 25 percent of the final bid.
The painting known as “African Mona Lisa” by late Ben Enwonwu, a London based Nigerian artist. The masterpiece painting “Tutu” was the portrait of “Adetutu Ademiluyi”, a grand-daughter of a highly respected traditional ruler from the Yoruba race in Nigeria.
Some paintings made by the artist are still missing but one of his paintings “Negritude”, was sold for £100,000 (about $140,000) at the auction.
