Rematch Between Joshua and Ruiz to be Finalised Next Week

The much-anticipated rematch between Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz Jr will be finalised next week with New York’s Madison Square Garden and a number of British venues under consideration promoter Eddie Hearn reveals.

Ruiz produced one of the biggest shocks in heavyweight boxing history to take Joshua’s IBF, WBO and WBA titles on June 1.

Joshua, 29, was sent to the canvas four times by an opponent who took the fight at short notice after Joshua’s original opponent Jarrell Miller failed drugs tests.

His promoter Eddie Hearn has activated a clause to enforce an immediate rematch, which will be held in either November or December with New York’s Madison Square Garden and a number of British venues under consideration.

Hearn said Joshua’s preference is to once again hold the fight at Madison Square Garden because he is keen to ‘rewrite history.’

“The job over the next week is just to finalise the details now of just where and when that will be,” Hearn told Sky Sports News.

“I can’t tell you too much, just because I don’t know other than, between November 16 and December 14 will be the date of the fight.

“We’ve had offers from five different countries to stage the fight. For me, it’s a straight decision between the UK or America.

“In the UK, we’re talking to Cardiff, to Wembley, to Tottenham and in America, we’ve had a couple of approaches, but our preference is Madison Square Garden. A sensible man would say “do it in the UK.”
